carapace
the hard shell on the top of the tarantula's head
CB
Captive Bred, meaning the tarantula was bred by a tarantula keeper / breeder rather than being caught in the wild (see WC)
chelicera
a spider's "fangs"
invertebrate
literally means no spine
invertebrates do not have an internal skeleton, they have an exoskeleton
epigastric furrow
this is the pocket in which the female spider receives the males sperm during mating
exoskeleton
thick hide or shell of an invertebrate creature
exuvium
the empty shell left after a spider molts
opisthosoma
the rear segment of a tarantula
also referred to as the abdomen
pedipalp
front leg-like appendages on the tarantula, they are shorter than the legs
on mature males, they are bulbous at the tips and are used to hold sperm for mating
prosoma
the forward or front segment of a tarantula
also referred to as the head
sling
short for spiderling
spiderling
a very young spider
tibial spurs
hooks on the underside of the tibia (long segment) of the front pair of legs and are used to hold off the female during mating
WC
Wild Caught, meaning that the tarantula was caught in the wild rather than being Captive Bred (CB).
